About The Flow Within

"The Flow Within" is an interactive art installation that visualizes the energy and health of Stratford's Avon River, inviting community engagement through online interactions.

"The Flow Within" is a thought-provoking interactive art installation designed to engage visitors to the Lights on Stratford Festival.   By reimagining some of the Avon River's essential elements—water flow, sediment, and fish—this visualizer installation aims to communicate the dynamic energy and historical complexity of the Avon River in Stratford. By combining interactive technology and community participation, the installation serves as a bridge between art and environmental awareness.

The concept of "The Flow Within" centers on often overlooked elements of the last hundred years of the Avon River's history. The installation seeks to highlight the river's unseen energy and the diverse life it supports. Pollutants and sediments affect the river's health and impact Stratford's environment. Increased sediments can harm aquatic life, while fluctuating water levels are indicators of the overall health of the ecosystem. These forces are represented on a graphic visualizer by changing gradients and particle distributions. Similarly, undulating wave patterns represent data collected on the local fish population. Put together, the project visualizes the Avon River's complexity.
